Choosing the ideal portable restroom for your event or worksite is a must-do if you want your guests or workers to have a comfortable, sanitary experience.
Gone are the days of basic (and frankly, icky) porta potties that offered little more than privacy, if even that.
Today’s modern portable restrooms come equipped with advanced features, making them more convenient, hygienic, and user-friendly – but choosing the right one for your needs means knowing what to look for.
Best Features to Look For in a Porta Potty
When shopping for the best portable restroom offerings for your event or work site, you’ll need to know the top features of portable restrooms so you know what to look for.
Here’s what to keep in mind.
Spacious and Comfortable Interiors
One of the biggest improvements in modern portable restrooms is their design. Look for portable restrooms that boast interiors with enough space for guests to move comfortably.
Handwashing Stations and Hand Sanitizers
Tools for cleaning hands are always necessary, but especially when it comes to events with food or when restrooms are in heavy use.
Flushing Toilets and Waste Containment
Unlike older porta potties, many modern units feature flushing toilets. This enhances the user experience and helps contain odors more effectively.
Ventilation Systems
Proper ventilation is critical to maintaining a pleasant restroom experience. Modern portable restrooms are designed with efficient ventilation systems that reduce odors and improve air circulation.
ADA Accessibility
If you’re hosting a public event or an open worksite, it’s essential to consider the needs of all individuals, including those who are differently abled.
Seek out ADA-compliant units, which are larger and equipped with features like handrails, ramps, and low thresholds to ensure accessibility for everyone.
Luxury Options
For upscale events such as weddings, corporate functions, or VIP areas at festivals, luxury portable restrooms are a great choice.
They include features like interior lighting, sinks with running water, flushing toilets, mirrors, and even air conditioning.
Advanced Odor Control
Older porta potties were notorious for their unpleasant odors. Modern portable restrooms, however, are equipped with advanced ventilation systems and odor-reducing technologies like chemical treatments and air fresheners.
Environmentally Friendly Options
Many modern units are designed with sustainability in mind. Features like solar-powered fans and eco-friendly waste management systems help reduce the environmental impact of portable restrooms, making them a more responsible choice for events and worksites.
Portable Restroom Red Flags
Not all porta potties are created equal.
While it’s important to know the best features of modern portable restrooms, you also need to have an eye out for signs that the restroom isn’t quite right. Now that you know what to look for in a porta-potty, here’s what to avoid.
Poor Hygiene Standards
If a portable restroom lacks basic hygiene features like toilet paper holders, handwashing options, or proper ventilation, it’s time to run in the other direction.
These missing features can lead to unsanitary conditions, which may leave a negative impression on guests and create health concerns.
Unmaintained or Outdated Units
Stay away from restrooms that appear poorly maintained or outdated.
Rusty locks, damaged interiors, and stained floors are signs of neglect and can ruin the user experience.
Lack of Sufficient Ventilation
A lack of ventilation can make portable restrooms stuffy and smelly. If the unit doesn’t feature some form of airflow or odor control, you’ll want to look elsewhere.
